One wrong step

I hope you had a great start in new year. Here the days are a tiny bit longer and sometimes there is already a smell of spring in the air.

In beginning of October we wanted to spend some days on Heron. The forecast for first couple of days was some rain and lots of wind, so we decided to stay in marina and do some trips in the surroundings with our car. First day we drove to one of the pretty creeks in vicinity, the Čikola with its very picturesque spring. The best view of it is from above, from the viewpoint Goriš.

Beside gorgeous views there were also plenty of pretty flowers there.

Next we drove further along Čikola canyon...

...and stopped at the parking space above the zip line. We decided to do a short hike and I was thrilled with many pretty flowers and creatures we saw.

There were climbers in these vertical walls...
...and on the other side we could see the zip line station.

Then we decided to walk back to our car, there were several more places we still wanted to visit that day. But when I stepped over one bigger rock I landed on some gravel on the other side, my foot twisted and I slipped and fell. And obviously while falling I managed to injure the other foot as well. It all happened so quickly I didn't even manage to record and process all that was happening. Next moment I was sitting on the ground and tried to assess the damage. Both feet were hurting, the right one more than the left one and I thought both ankles were sprained. I got up and started to walk back to our car as fast as I could. I felt the right ankle getting more and more swollen and walking was quite painful. Unfortunately there was 15 minutes walk to our car and the trail was too narrow for Tomaz to be walking alongside me so he was not able to support me. When we eventually got to the car I was really tired and in pain. Of course we drove straight back to our boat.

Next morning both of my ankles were swollen and painful, although we were putting ice on my feet and bandaged them. We stayed on boat for next few days and it wasn't very pleasant, I had hard time getting to the bathroom and to the table to eat. And Tomaz had to do all the household chores.

After a couple of days we realized there is no point in staying on the bot as my feet were not getting much better, so we decided to drive back home. Tomaz asked two marineros from marina to help support me so I could get to the car. We decided to drive to ER in hospital in Novo mesto to check the situation and they made an X-ray of both feet and the right ankle was broken. That explained all the pain and swelling. Luckily the left ankle was "just" sprained. I got a brace (opornico) on my right leg, it was too swollen for a cast (gips) and I wasn't suppose to put any weight on it. I got cast two weeks later in ER in Novo mesto...

...and I still wasn't suppose to put any weight on my right leg for another four weeks.

And it was a long six weeks. As both of my legs were almost unusable, I spent them laying or sitting down with my legs up and I had to use a wheelchair to get to the bathroom and kitchen. All the time Tomaz was taking a great care of me.

After my cast was removed I started with physiotherapy and made some progress every day. While I was thrilled with every new thing I was able to do, like walking up the stairs, then walking down the stairs, then driving the car, I wouldn't mind if the progress was faster, you know I am not a patient person. At the moment I can take care of myself pretty well and am mostly self-sufficient, but it will probably take another couple of months before I have all my strength and mobility back, have no pain and swelling  and am able to forget about that fateful wrong step.
