Lanzarote - part 2

Next we drove by on Timanfaya, the fire mountain. We thought we should take the tour around the volcanoes, but then decided to drive around a little more and come back late in the afternoon, when there's not so many buses there. A bit further down the road we stopped and started to climb a small volcano, but soon changed our mind as our sandals were not fit for the sand and small gravel.
We drove further North along many volcanoes and through the town of Tinajo...

...and came to the village of La Santa. On the peninsula nearby there is La Santa club and they even have a very sheltered lagoon where people were learning windsurfing.
But on the ocean side of the peninsula people were doing real wave surfing. There were couple of surfers in this bay in the North...
... and many more on the West side.
Waves were pretty impressing.
We drove further NE, through the village of Soo, and  ended up in the village of Caleta de Femara.
It is a funny place with mostly sandy streets and where you can see a parked boat between parked cars.
But we found a nice restaurant, called Restaurante Sol, with great view of the ocean and very good food. Beside the usual suspects - nice Canary wrinkly potatoes with mojo, delicious garlic shrimps and plump and juicy steamed mussels...
...we got to try gofio, a dish made of toasted corn flour, cooked in fish broth and served with onion wedges sprinkled with salt and vinegar. The idea is to use the onion as a spoon and then bite off some of it with the gofio. It was delicious, but as the Captain said - no kissing after this dish.
We really enjoyed it, along with good food and a beer and a glass of Lanzarote's wine we had a great view of Isla Graziosa...
...and Femara cliffs. After the lunch we drove closer to the cliffs and discovered sand dunes and many people with surf boards on the beach. The cliffs looked impressing and at that time I didn't know that the next day we would be standing on top of them looking down on the bay and the beach.
It was windy and the sand was everywhere. This is how it tried to reclaim the road.
We drove further to Teguise and then on towards Arrecife and decided to do the Timanfaya tour next morning. We did some shopping on the way, and the drove to the last volcano for the day, the one almost in our yard, on SW point of Costa Blanca, the Montana Roja. Sun was already very low when we got there and we hurried uphill, although we didn't have much hope to reach the top in time for the sunset. But there was still some light when we got to the edge of caldera.
We didn't walk to the West rim, the light was fading and we wanted to get down before it was completely dark. There was a great view towards East, where the marina Rubicon is.
It was almost dark when we reached the car and we drove to the marina, tired and dusty but full of impressions of the beautiful day.

Next morning we didn't start as early as we planned. We drove to Timanfaya mountain, and saw many pretty and colourful views along the way.

At the entrance to volcano tour there was a queue of cars waiting to get in and we decided to drive to the Cactus garden first and return to Timanfaya in the afternoon. Near Mancha Blanca we saw several vineyards...
...even this cactus had a shelter from the wind.
Opposite of this red volcano we saw a smaller one...
...and decided to hike up to the top.
There were some great views from the top...

...and there was some cultivated land in the caldera.

It was a nice hike, this time with proper shoes. We even saw two falcons or kestrels, but they were too fast for my camera.

  1. As usual, terrific photos! My rule of thumb for garlic and onions is kissing is fine as long as you both ate that same garlic or onion dish together;).
